The School of Health and Population Sciences is part of the college of Medicine at the University of Birmingham.  It is a vibrant and rapidly expanding school, with well established management structures in place. The School of Health and Population Sciences is a major international centre for research and education in medicine and medical sciences. It is well integrated in the local National Health Service and a major contributor to the Birmingham Clinical Research Academy, which is directed by Professor Richard Lilford. In 1998 the School expanded its links with the NHS as part of its ‘Black Country Strategy’, and now works closely with 15 teaching hospitals and more than 50 primary care training practices across the West Midlands in England.

Research team and qualifications


Professor Richard Lilford, PhD., FRCOG., FRCP, FFPH

is Professor of Clinical Epidemiology and Director of Birmingham Clinical Research Academy; He directs the National Health Service R&D Portfolio of Patient Safety Research for the Department of Health in England and is currently evaluating the Health Foundation’s Safer Hospitals Initiative.

Richard is a member of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) Appraisals Committee and a past member of the Medical Research Council Health Services and Public Health Research Board.  He is vice-chair of the Research and Development Committee of NICE. He is also a member of the World Health Organization Safety Alliance Subgroup on Research Methodology.

Richard’s research interests include the methodology of clinical trials, patient safety and evaluating service delivery interventions. He also has a long-standing interest in the application of Bayesian analyses to medical and health-related research.
