The Avedis Donabedian Institute (FAD) is a non-profit organization that supports quality efforts in Health and Social Care in Spain since 1989. The Board includes among others: the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Spanish Society for Quality in Health Care, the Spanish Society of Health Economics and the Spanish Federation of Health Managers. The activities at FAD focus on different activities related to change and quality improvement implementation and research in health and social care and in so far more than 400 centres in Spain.
The quality improvement area has supported the development of internal quality programs in more than 150 centres in various regions of Spain. Activities also include the development and testing of quality indicators for scientific societies and the implementation of clinical guidelines at different levels. The Social Care, Long Term and Psychiatric Care unit has experience in indicator development and in consensus programs. FAD also includes an important patient safety programme: the Clinical Safety Research Centre supported by the Medical, Nursing, and Pharmacists Colleges and the Specialization Association of all medical professionals. This Centre is engaged in different research projects including several hospitals to identify adverse events and their causes in hospitals and promoting alerts to avoid patients' injuries, spread safety culture, implement safety indicators etc. Finally, FAD leads and collaborates in important policy research projects at European level.

Rosa Suñol MD, PhD

is Director of the Quality Research Chair at the Faculty of Medicine. Special editor of the International Journal for Quality in Health Care since 1991 and Board Member to Joint Commission International (JCI). Leader of the EU research project MARQuIS (Methods of Assessing Response to Quality Improvement Strategies). She has 6 International awards in Quality Improvement for articles and research work.

Carola Orrego RN, MA, Msc

is Quality and Safety Project Director for Avedis Donabedian Institute. She has participated in the design and management in about 20 patient safety projects with medical societies and health care organizations, with the purpose of quality improvement through the implementation process of evidence-based practices in Spain.

Oliver Gröne MA, MSc, PhD

is Director of Research and Education and responsible for research coordination and quality improvement training, including a Master Programme on Evaluation and Improvement of Health Care Quality. In his previous function as Programme Manager for Quality of Health Systems & Services at WHO EURO he collaborated with Ministries and other national level stakeholders in the development, implementation and evaluation of hospital-related quality improvement activities.

Joaquin Bañeres MD

is currently leading the patient safety initiatives involving 20 patient safety projects with 11 medical associations as well as the design and management of implementation process of fourteen clinical guidelines for integrated care including hand-off from primary care to hospitals.
